What's happening now on Turnalt Farm

January 2002

General

The December snow and frost lasted just into the first week of the new year. The rain then returned for almost the rest of the month. Two severe gales caused damage to power lines and some minor structural damage.

Sheep

On the 8th of January Hoggs wintering at Kintraw Farm were dozed for Fluke (liver disease). Clachaig ewes were gathered in from the hill and dozed on the 10th, Arichuan ewes on the 11th and Lagandarroch on the 12th. The 18th and 21st saw Turnalt and Grianaig gathered and dozed to finish the job. At the end of the month mineral blocks for the sheep were taken out to the store bins on the hill. They will be distributed to areas of the hill as and when required.

Cattle

The main job is still the daily feeding of the cattle in the sheds and the few on the hill. Calves continued to be born throughout the month.

Crops

In January the weather was so poor that only two days of turnip harvesting was possible.
