What's happening now on Turnalt Farm

December 2001

General

December saw an improvement in the weather which was mainly dry and cold. Snow fell on Christmas night and unusually, stayed with us into the new year.

Sheep

Iain and Hamish have been kept busy in December with the tupping season in full swing. This has required them to go out on the hills daily to check on the tups. The tups remained on the hills until the end of the month.

Cattle

There is more work to do now in the Cattle department with daily feeding now required. In early December there was good trade for the Bullocks and Heifers sold at Oban Market.

Crops

In December, Potato lifting was finally completed by the middle of the month. This was a very late finish to the potato harvesting, due to the previous wet weather. The Turnips continued to be lifted by hand while the ground remained too wet for the Tractor to work on.
