What's happening now on Turnalt Farm

July 2001

July 01, Heather in Bloom

General

In July the weather was mixed and unfortunately there was some new cases of Foot and Mouth disease in England and Wales but Scotland remains clear with no new cases reported recently. There are recent proposals for livestock markets to reopen with strict conditions and hopefully this will be the beginning of the return to normal trading of livestock.

Sheep

During July all the marking, clipping and dipping was completed, thanks again to the friends and relatives that helped out with this. Some older yeld ewes (ewes that did not have a lamb) were sold for slaughter as were some wedder lambs from Turnalt hill. We are still awaiting news of when live lambs can be sold through the market.

Cattle

Again there has been no change or work in the Cattle department over the past month, the cattle are all out grazing in the fields and on the hills.

Crops

The Turnip thinning has been completed and the first of the potatoes are now ready. Good weather in the middle of the month saw most of the hay baled in both round and small bales.
