What's happening now on Turnalt Farm

February 2001

Sheep

The main concern this month has been the outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease, firstly in England and during the last week in Southern Scotland. All movement of livestock has been banned and we, along with other farms, are taking what precautions we can to limit the spread of this disease.

During February mineral feed blocks have been put out on all the hills for the sheep. A small tracked vehicle is used to help with this task.

Cattle

Over the past month all the cattle have had new larger identification tags fitted to their ears. These are more clearly seen from a distance. A few calves have been born during this period.

Crops

The turnip harvesting is well underway now with more than half of the crop lifted. Alastair has been busy speading dung on the fields which will produce hay in the summer.
